We work for a 100% sustainable future

With our hearts tied to this land and opening the way to new dreams, we have created a faithful reflection of the landscape of the island of Lanzarote that can be appreciated throughout the hotel’s facilities.
After 35 years of history in the hospitality sector and with humility, effort and sacrifice, we have managed to become a benchmark on this magical island.

Bioclimatic architecture

The architectural design of La Isla y el Mar aims to get our clients to enjoy an atmosphere of well-being and energy without harming the environment.
The boutique hotel La Isla y el Mar follows the Biosphere Reserve declaration framework. To this end, the existing buildings have been painted white, with closed, anthropic spaces, and maintaining the interior characteristics so that guests can enjoy their privacy. The common spaces, however, have been designed using an architecture of open spaces, where the guest comes into contact with the landscape through which he moves and of which he is a part.

In Lanzarote, the rivers of rock, when crossing the ocean, form landscapes, either as encounters between two powers, or as elements of union forming a single reality. These landscapes of union and encounter have been the inspiration for the project of La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique.

The complexity that is projected in our architecture has an aesthetic continuity that uses sky and sea as infinite, perpetual elements, and natural rock as the creator of different spaces and environments.

Our architecture is dynamic: the ceilings and walls are discontinuous, the rocks dominate the landscape and the reflections of complementary materials make it a part of the the environment, placing and moving the observer magically between landscape features.

We have seen to every last detail. For example, our corridors, which are located to the north of the buildings, are oriented to be welcoming and benefit from the warmth in winter. They are meandering to block the wind with the walls. The buildings have a rock wool envelope insulation as a passive measure, providing high resistance to noise transmission.

La Isla y el Mar is a hotel that holds the Biosphere Responsible Tourism sustainability certificate, a title that guarantees the establishment’s sustainable management.

We have the best available and viable technological tools to be able to carry out an efficient management of water resources and most of our cleaning products are biodegradable.

La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique also has geothermal energy. During the renovation, an 80-metre well was drilled, from which seawater is extracted and channeled through the corridors and taken to the rooms to operate the air conditioning. The boiler for heating the pool is heated by solar panels.

In waste management, our mission is to raise awareness among guests, employees and collaborators about good practices to minimise, reduce and correctly manage waste.

We want all our guests to be part of our recycling system, so we have placed selective bins in the suite living rooms where waste can be sorted accordingly.

Regarding hazardous waste, our staff has the necessary training and experience for its management in our internal recycling point.

The hotel has decided to join the Biosphere-Smart Hotel project, which aims to recognise the commitment to innovation, technological modernisation and the adoption of recommended measures through the Smart Hotel seal.

The Smart Hotel seal certifies that La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique can guarantee the safety of its guests, employees and collaborators inside the hotel facilities. We comply with current data protection regulations (LOPD).

Wi-Fi is free both in the rooms and in the common areas. The contents and legal requirements of the website are updated daily. It also has a secure payment system, an SSL certificate and a trust mark.

We have an energy certification label, being the first certified hotel in the Canary Islands where it is observed that the annual final energy consumption indicators show that we consume 4 times less than a hotel of the same characteristics that is not sustainable.

We also have a state-of-the-art air conditioning system with intelligent and centralised control, which allows us to optimise savings and energy efficiency.

La Isla y el Mar Boutique Hotel has a smart lighting control system, which allows you to manage the lights through automation systems and switches with light intensity regulators.

Social development

La Isla y el Mar Boutique Hotel is owned by the Martínez Hermanos Business Group, an entity that, together with its business activity, has managed the Martínez Hermanos Foundation since 2013, whose goals are to promote the social environment in order to achieve greater equity, increase people’s quality of life and improve their surroundings, all while promoting changes in people’s behaviour and values that imply a greater commitment by all to the overall improvement of society.

The foundation’s main fields of action in terms of social development are in the areas of social assistance, health, education, employment, catering and equipment.

Some of the campaigns that have been carried out include the donation of food to different schools and orphanages, the transmission of educational and nutritional values through sport, the Smile Project, the Barraquer Project, the Route of Light Campaign and the Solidarity Shoes Project, among others.

Biosphere reserve

La Isla y el Mar Boutique Hotel is a member of the Biosphere Reserve Tourist Product Club. It is an initiative that aims to establish a method to create a tourism product that stands out for its location in a selection of territories, the Network of Spanish Biosphere Reserves, where it is possible to get to know and enjoy the natural heritage shaped by human activities and unique samples of ethnographic heritage.

In addition, La Isla y el Mar Hotel Boutique has signed the Responsible Traveler Manifesto, a manifesto prepared by the ITR that obliges it to commit to the environment and to local development. We have also joined the Manifesto of Tourism Companies so that we may share our commitment with others.
